Les Cent vues d'Edo sont, avec les 53 stations du Tōkaidō et les 69 stations du Kiso Kaidō, l'une des séries majeures de meisho-e, de « vues célèbres » célébrant les paysages japonais, que compte l'œuvre très abondante de Hiroshige.

Cette série diffère des deux autres sur plusieurs points, et en particulier, par le recours fréquent à des gravures cadrées verticalement, et non plus exclusivement horizontalement.

Analyse commentée de l'œuvre

Cette estampe a servi de modèle à Vincent van Gogh. (pour de plus amples détails, voir le paragraphe traitant de l'influence sur Van Gogh dans l'artice Hiroshige)

Tout le premier plan est occupé par un grand prunier, dont on ne voit qu'une partie. À l'arrière plan et à perte de vue, d'autres pruniers en fleurs. Au fond du décor se trouvent les petites silhouettes à peine esquissées des visiteurs venus contempler la beauté de la floraison. Ces ébauches de personnes viennent apporter le contrepoint nécessaire à l'arbre du premier plan et permettent de donner de la profondeur de champ.

Le tableau fait ressortir deux couleurs : le vert de l'herbe dans la partie inférieure et le rouge du ciel (la scène se passe sans doute au soleil levant ou couchant). Au milieu est insérée une bande presque blanche qui vient faire la transition entre le vert et le rouge et contraste avec le tronc très foncé du premier plan.

La pruneraie était située à Edo (Tōkyō), derrière le sanctuaire Kameido-Tenjin, célèbre pour ses glycines. Il se peut que l'arbre représenté soit celui qui était le plus célèbre d'Edo, le Garyūume.

De nos jours seules les pierres des ruines de l'ancienne villa « Pruneraie » viennent rappeler la splendeur passée du jardin qui fut progressivement laissé à l'abandon à la suite d'une inondation survenue en 1910.

Tout comme la précédente, cette estampe a servi de modèle à Vincent van Gogh lorsqu'il a cherché à comprendre comment les peintres japonais travaillaient.

Avec la suivante, il s'agit d'une des estampes les plus célèbres d'Hiroshige.

Le tableau tout entier représente une scène de pluie violente sur le pont Ōhashi, près d'Atake. Sur le pont des gens se pressent et se protègent de la pluie, un homme seul dans une barge sur la Sumida est trempé et au loin, sur la berge, les maisons sont perdues dans le gris et ne se distinguent presque plus.

On remarque deux lignes de force dans ce tableau : la berge au fond qui vient renforcer la profondeur de champ et qui, pour une ligne d'horizon, n'est étrangement pas horizontale et le pont qui lui aussi est incliné allant du bas gauche à la moitié droite du tableau. L'originalité réside ici dans la vue latérale du pont qui ne permet pas d'en percevoir le commencement ou la fin et donne l'impression d'étirement.

À l'aide de quelques artifices Hiroshige a su décrire avec précision le déchaînement des éléments naturels : la masse opaque des nuages en haut, les dégradés de couleurs sous le pont, les maisons sur la berge noyées dans l'obscurité, les traits zébrant le tableau qui représentent l'intensité de la pluie.

Avec la précédente, il s'agit d'une des estampes les plus célèbres d'Hiroshige.

À Edo, à l'époque où elle fut réalisée (1857), certains quartiers s'étaient regroupés autour d'un métier en particulier et portaient un nom directement en rapport avec la profession. Ainsi, ce tableau représente le quartier des teinturiers de Kanda. Teinture se dit konya en japonais et le quartier portait le nom de konyamachi.

Une fois le tissu teinté, il devait ensuite être lavé et séché. C'est ce qui est visible dans cette estampe : les morceaux de tissus sont étendus sur des séchoirs et volent au vent. Hiroshige exploite graphiquement ce premier plan avec une grande habileté, en le faisant contraster avec la douce sérénité de la montagne sacrée dans le lointain.

Il n'était pas rare que le peintre s'amuse à glisser son nom dans un élément du décor d'une estampe, ce qui est le cas ici puisque les étoffes sont imprimées des deux caractère « e » et « hiro » pour Hiroshige.

À l'arrière plan apparaissent deux éléments importants : le château d'Edo où Hiroshige fut jadis rattaché en qualité de pompier et tout au loin, le mont Fuji.
