Les spiraliens regroupaient à l'origine l'ensemble des Modèle:B embranchements caractérisés par un clivage de l'œuf du type spiral. Mais ce taxon a été réaménagé selon les besoins de la cladistique et il n'y n'a plus de correspondance biunivoque avec cette caractéristique.
Ce taxon a un contenu variable selon les auteurs :
- il a été crée par Nielsen[1] dans le cadre d'une opposition, sur des critères morphologiques, entre Cycloneuralia (Nematoida + Scalidophora c'est-à-dire Ecdysozoa - Panarthropoda) et Spiralia (Lophotrochozoa + Panarthropoda - Phoronozoa[2]) ; cette définition regroupe donc selon l'auteur :
Spiralia = Bryozoa (Entoprocta + Ectoprocta)
+ Parenchymia (Platyhelminthes + Nemertini))
+ Gnathifera (Rotifera + Gnathostomulida + Chaetognatha)
+ Schizocoelia (Arthropoda+Tardigrada+Onychophora+Annelida+Mollusca+Sipuncula)
