Les spiraliens regroupaient à l'origine l'ensemble des embranchements caractérisés par un clivage de l'œuf du type spiral. Mais ce taxon a été réaménagé selon les besoins de la cladistique et il n'y a plus de correspondance biunivoque avec cette caractéristique.
Ce taxon a un contenu variable selon les auteurs :
- il a été créé par Nielsen[1] dans le cadre d'une opposition, sur des critères morphologiques, entre Cycloneuralia (Nematoida + Scalidophora c'est-à-dire Ecdysozoa - Panarthropoda) et Spiralia (Lophotrochozoa + Panarthropoda - Phoronozoa[2]) ; cette définition regroupe donc selon l'auteur :
Spiralia = Bryozoa (Entoprocta + Ectoprocta)
+ Parenchymia (Platyhelminthes + Nemertini))
+ Gnathifera (Rotifera + Gnathostomulida + Chaetognatha)
+ Schizocoelia (Arthropoda+Tardigrada+Onychophora+Annelida+Mollusca+Sipuncula)
cette opposition défendait le rapprochement entre Annélides et Panarthropodes (taxon Articulata) sur l'idée que la segmentation du corps était une caractéristique phylogénétiquement pertinente. Cette idée a été dénoncée par les analyses de phylogénie moléculaire qui lui ont substitué l'opposition Ecdysozoa <> Lophotrochozoa. - Peterson & Eernisse (2001)[3] l'ont redéfini par l'exclusion des Panarthropodes et des Chétognathes (et en le complétant des Cycliophora, nouvellement connus) : le taxon couvre donc les Lophotrochozoa - Phoronozoa[4] soit :
Spiralia = Ectoprocta
+ Platyzoa (Rotifera s.l. + Cycliophora + Gnathostomulida + Platyhelminthes)
+ Trochozoa (Entoprocta + (Nemertea+(Mollusca+Annelida+Echiura+Sipuncula))) - Giribet (2002)[5] l'utilise au sens de Lophotrochozoa s.l. dans un schéma :
Spiralia = Platyzoa + Lophotrochozoa s.s.
